Generate sequential Data Table values

Fill a chosen text field without overwriting values already present.

How to do it

  1. Create a Text field on a Data Table, such as External key or Campaign code.
  2. In table settings choose that target field, enter a prefix such as xxxxx-, a number width of 5 and next number 1.
  3. To fill blank values in existing rows, select Fill blank values and save. New rows with the target field blank receive the next number automatically.
  4. Check the stored values before using them as a primary or subscriber key.

Check your result

A 1,000-row fill from xxxxx-00001 assigns a different value to every blank row and leaves the next number at 1001. Existing nonblank values remain unchanged.

Good to know

Do not change the prefix or next number without checking existing values. A duplicate configured key stops the write; do not use a numeric sequence as an email address.
